Activity for Resource Document: Important Dates in the Voting History of the United States
The following is an activity that can be used at any grade level. The difficulty will be based on the expectations for the student groups.
Of course, teachers can use this multi-page document anyway they wish.
Divide the class into five (5) groups. Each group should:
- Be given the full Resource Document of Important Dates in the Voting History of the United States
- Be assigned a grouping from the list below
- Native Americans
- African Americans
- Women
- Asian Americans
- Hispanic Americans
(Teachers should feel free to add any grouping to this list they feel comfortable with and that appear on the Resource Document given i.e. Felons)
Each group will write an essay on:
- the history of the suffrage movement for their assigned grouping, from the resource document provided (other information may also be used), and
- should describe/discuss 2 problems which face that grouping with respect to suffrage (voting) today. If no problems exist – explain why that is the case.
There are 53 dates on the document: Important Dates in the Voting History of the United States.
