(1748-1828)
William Few was born in 1748 in Maryland, but moved to North Carolina when he was ten.
In 1771, William, his father, and a brother were involved with a group of frontiersmen who opposed the royal governor of North Carolina.
As a result, his brother was hanged, the family farm was destroyed, and the family had to flee to Georgia.
During the Revolution, he served as a lieutenant colonel in the dragoons.
Few served in the Georgia state legislature and the Continental Congress.
He missed much of the Philadelphia Convention because he was serving in Congress, but helped win congressional approval of the Constitution.
Few became one of Georgia’s first U.S. senators.
In 1799, he moved to New York, where he was active in New York state politics and banking.
